Choosing the Right Social Platforms

"We need to be on every platform" is one of the most expensive assumptions in marketing. Spreading a small team across too many channels usually produces mediocre content everywhere. Choosing well is a strategic decision.

Four questions to answer

  1. Where is the audience? Look at data, not assumptions: customer surveys, competitors' audiences and where existing customers interact.
  2. What content can we produce consistently? Video-first platforms need regular video; LinkedIn needs expertise; Pinterest needs strong visuals.
  3. What is the goal? Awareness, community, leads, sales or customer service each favour different platforms.
  4. What resources do we have? Time, budget and skills determine how many platforms can be done well.

A quick platform overview

  • Instagram: visual brands, lifestyle, hospitality and local businesses.
  • TikTok: entertaining and educational short video, strong discovery.
  • LinkedIn: B2B, professional services, recruiting and thought leadership.
  • Pinterest: inspiration and planning, such as home, fashion, food and events. Content has a long lifespan.
  • Facebook: communities, local audiences and advertising.
  • Snapchat: younger audiences and casual, ephemeral content.
  • X and Threads: real-time conversation, news and commentary.
  • YouTube: long-form video, tutorials and search-driven discovery.

Should a brand be on both X and Threads?

Only if there is a clear audience on each and the capacity to engage in conversation. Text-based platforms reward active participation more than scheduled posts.

Start focused, then expand

Master one or two platforms, build a rhythm and measure results. Add more only when there is a clear reason and capacity.
