The Skills Marketing Teams Need to Work Well with AI

Giving a team access to AI tools does not automatically make it more productive. Some people save hours every week. Others produce more content of lower quality. The difference is skill, and skills can be taught.

1. Briefing clearly

Good output starts with a good brief. Marketers who already write clear creative briefs tend to write good prompts too. They state the goal, the audience, the format, the tone and the constraints. Teach the team to treat a prompt like a brief to a junior colleague.

2. Critical review

AI produces confident text, and confident text is not always correct. Every team member needs to read output sceptically: check facts, spot vague claims and notice when the tone drifts away from the brand.

3. Editing, not accepting

The best results come from people who use AI drafts as raw material. They cut, restructure and rewrite. A useful habit is to change at least the opening, the structure and the examples of any AI draft.

4. Data literacy

AI increasingly sits inside analytics, ad platforms and CRM systems. Marketers need to understand what the numbers mean, how automated recommendations are generated and when to override them.

5. Knowing the ethical and legal limits

Team members should know which data must never go into a public tool, how copyright applies to generated assets and when AI use should be disclosed. In Europe, data protection makes this especially important.

6. Workflow thinking

The biggest gains come from redesigning a process, not from speeding up a single task. People who can map a workflow and spot where AI fits, and where it does not, become very valuable.

7. Choosing tools sensibly

A paid subscription is worth it when a tool saves measurable time on a frequent task, handles data safely and fits the existing stack. Trial tools on real work for a few weeks before committing.

8. Staying curious

Tools change constantly. Set aside regular time for the team to test new features and share what works.

Building these skills

Short internal workshops, shared prompt libraries and peer review go a long way. If you would rather bring in outside help, oceanone's AI consulting team can run training and workflow design for your agency or your clients.
