Many clients now ask their agency the same question: "What should we be doing with AI?" Answering with a list of tools is tempting, and it rarely helps. A useful answer is a strategy that ties AI to business outcomes the client already cares about.

How to Build an AI Marketing Strategy for Your Clients

Many clients now ask their agency the same question: "What should we be doing with AI?" Answering with a list of tools is tempting, and it rarely helps. A useful answer is a strategy that ties AI to business outcomes the client already cares about.

Start with the workflow, not the tool

Map how the client's marketing actually gets done today. Who writes the briefs? How long does a campaign take from idea to launch? Where do approvals get stuck? You are looking for tasks that are repetitive, time-consuming and low-risk. Those are the best first candidates for AI.

Pick a small number of use cases

Resist the urge to automate everything at once. Choose two or three use cases with a clear owner and a measurable outcome, for example:

  • Content operations: AI-assisted outlines and first drafts, edited by a specialist writer.
  • Paid media: generating ad copy variations for structured testing.
  • Customer engagement: an AI agent that answers common questions and hands complex ones to a person.
  • Reporting: automated data pulls and summaries so analysts spend their time on insight rather than copy-and-paste.

Define success before you start

For each use case, agree on one primary metric with the client. That might be hours saved per month, time to launch, cost per lead or response time. Measure a baseline first, otherwise you will never be able to prove the change.

Put guardrails in place

An AI strategy without governance is a liability. Agree on which data can be used, who reviews outputs and how errors are reported. Our guide to using AI responsibly covers this in more detail.

Plan for people, not just platforms

The biggest barrier is usually skills and habits rather than technology. Include training, clear documentation and a named internal champion on the client side.

Roll out in phases

  1. Pilot: one use case, one team, four to eight weeks.
  2. Evaluate: compare against the baseline and collect feedback.
  3. Scale: extend what worked and drop what did not.
  4. Review: revisit the roadmap every quarter.
