Keeping Brand Voice Consistent Across Channels

A brand's voice is how it sounds in words. When it shifts between channels, the brand feels less trustworthy. Consistency builds recognition.

Define the voice

Describe the brand's personality in three to five traits, with examples of what each trait means in practice and what it does not. For example: "confident, not arrogant".

Voice and tone

The voice stays the same; tone adapts to context. A brand can be more playful on social media and more careful in a complaint response, while still sounding like itself.

Audit the current voice

  1. Collect examples from website, social, email, ads and support.
  2. Compare them against the voice definition.
  3. Note inconsistencies in wording, formality and style.
  4. Update guidelines and examples accordingly.

Tools for consistency

  • A short voice guide with examples.
  • A word list: preferred terms and terms to avoid.
  • Templates for common messages.
  • Review by a brand guardian before publishing.

Consistency with many writers

Agencies, partners and AI tools all contribute content. Share the guide with everyone and include it in briefs and prompts.
