Designing Websites That Drive Results

Clients often brief a website by describing how it should look. The more useful question is what it should do. Pretty and profitable are not opposites, but when they conflict, results should win.

Start with goals and audience

Define the website's primary goal, such as enquiries, bookings, sales or applications, and the main audiences. Every page should support one of those goals for one of those audiences.

Copy first, then design

Designing with placeholder text produces layouts that look good until real content arrives. Write or at least outline the key messages first, then design around them. Copy determines hierarchy, length and flow.

Make the hero section count

The top of the homepage and key landing pages should answer, within seconds:

  • What is this? A clear headline.
  • Why should I care? A supporting line focused on the benefit.
  • What do I do next? One prominent call to action.

A memorable hero combines a sharp message with a visual that reinforces it, rather than a generic stock image.

Guide visitors through the page

Use visual hierarchy, consistent spacing and a logical sequence: problem, solution, proof, next step. Calls to action should appear at natural decision points, not only at the bottom.

Build trust visibly

Testimonials, case studies, recognisable clients, certifications, clear pricing information and real contact details reduce hesitation.

Remove friction

Short forms, fast loading, mobile-friendly layouts and accessible design all increase conversions.

Measure after launch

Set up analytics and conversion tracking from day one. Review behaviour, test improvements and treat the launch as the start of optimisation. Our guide to CRO misconceptions explains where to begin.
