How to Stop Endless Revision Rounds

"Just one more small change" is how projects go over budget. Endless revisions frustrate teams, delay launches and rarely improve the result. The fix starts long before the first draft.

Better briefs mean fewer revisions

Most revision rounds happen because the brief left room for interpretation. A strong brief covers goals, audience, key messages, mandatory elements, examples of what the client likes and dislikes, and who approves the work. Our briefing templates are a useful starting point.

Agree on the number of rounds upfront

State in the agreement how many revision rounds are included and what counts as a revision versus a new request. Explain the cost of additional rounds before they happen, not after.

Consolidate feedback

Ask the client to send one consolidated set of feedback per round, from all stakeholders. Feedback trickling in from five people across a week guarantees conflicting requests.

Ask better questions about design feedback

When a client says "I don't like it", dig deeper:

  • What specifically feels wrong: colour, layout, imagery, tone?
  • Who is this for, and how do you think they will react?
  • Is there an example of something that feels closer?
  • What problem should this design solve?

These questions turn subjective reactions into actionable feedback.

Show work earlier

Share sketches, wireframes or outlines before polished drafts. Changing direction at the concept stage costs minutes rather than days.

Present with reasoning

Explain why each design or copy decision was made and how it supports the goal. Clients who understand the thinking request fewer arbitrary changes.

Know when to stop

If a project is stuck in endless loops, pause and hold a call to reset goals. Sometimes the brief has changed and needs to be rewritten.

Delivery support

oceanone's design and development teams work from structured briefs and clear revision policies. See our ad-hoc design support for flexible, well-managed design capacity.
