Humanising AI-Assisted Copy: Keeping Your Brand Voice Intact

AI drafts have a recognisable flavour: balanced sentences, safe adjectives, tidy lists of three and conclusions that restate the introduction. Readers notice, even if they cannot say why. The fix is not to stop using AI. It is to edit like you mean it.

Start with a voice guide

You cannot edit towards a voice you have not defined. A short voice guide should cover:

  • three to five personality traits, each with a "this, not that" example,
  • words the brand uses and words it avoids,
  • how formal it is and whether it uses humour,
  • sentence length and rhythm preferences.

Feed this guide into your prompts, then use it again when editing.

Ten editing moves that make copy human

  1. Rewrite the opening. Start with a specific situation, question or observation instead of a general statement.
  2. Add real detail. Replace "many businesses" with a concrete example from the client's world.
  3. Cut filler. Delete phrases like "in today's fast-paced world" and "it's important to note".
  4. Vary sentence length. Mix short punches with longer explanations.
  5. Use the client's language. Borrow words customers actually use in reviews and calls.
  6. Take a position. Human writers have opinions. Say what you recommend and why.
  7. Break the pattern. Not everything needs three bullet points.
  8. Read it aloud. Anything you would not say to a person should be rewritten.
  9. Check every fact. Remove any statistic or claim you cannot source.
  10. End with a next step, not a summary.

Train the tool, then train the team

Better inputs produce better drafts. Share approved examples, the voice guide and clear briefs with the tool. Then make sure every writer knows that the draft is where the work begins.

Where human writers matter most

Sales pages, brand stories, thought leadership and sensitive topics deserve a specialist writer from the start. AI can support research, but the voice should come from a person.
