YouTube Optimisation

YouTube is a video platform and one of the world's largest search engines at the same time. Videos can keep attracting viewers for years if they are found, clicked and watched. Optimisation helps with all three.

Start with topic research

Look for questions your audience searches for: how-tos, comparisons, reviews and explanations. YouTube's own search suggestions and the questions in comments on competitors' videos are excellent sources.

Titles that are found and clicked

A good title includes the main search term naturally and gives a reason to click. Keep the most important words at the beginning.

Descriptions that help

  • A first paragraph that summarises the video and includes relevant keywords.
  • Chapters or timestamps for longer videos.
  • Links to related videos, playlists and the website.
  • Natural use of terms viewers would search for, without stuffing.

Thumbnails

Thumbnails strongly influence click-through rates. Use clear, high-contrast images, a visible face or subject where appropriate and very little text. Keep a consistent style across the channel.

Keep people watching

Deliver on the title quickly, cut slow introductions and structure videos clearly. Use end screens and cards to point to the next video.

Shorts

Shorts reach new audiences quickly. Use them for quick tips, highlights or teasers that lead to longer videos.

Playlists and channel structure

Organise videos into playlists by topic so viewers keep watching and the channel looks coherent.

Useful tools

Keyword research tools, YouTube analytics and thumbnail testing help refine what works. Retention graphs show exactly where viewers drop off.
