How to Optimise Content for AI Search and AI Overviews

Search no longer ends with ten blue links. AI overviews, chat assistants and answer engines now summarise information and cite a handful of sources. Being one of those sources is the new visibility.

The good news: most of what helps content appear in AI answers is simply good content practice, applied with discipline.

Answer the question directly

AI systems look for passages that answer a query clearly. Put a concise answer near the top of the relevant section, then expand. If a page is about "how long a website redesign takes", say so in the first lines rather than after three paragraphs of context.

Structure for extraction

  • Use descriptive H2 and H3 headings phrased the way people ask questions.
  • Keep paragraphs short and focused on one idea.
  • Use lists and tables for steps, comparisons and specifications.
  • Add an FAQ section for common follow-up questions.

Context beats keyword density

AI search understands meaning, not just matching words. Cover a topic thoroughly: related concepts, typical questions, pros and cons and practical examples. Pages that show genuine expertise on a subject are more likely to be cited than pages repeating a keyword.

Show who is behind the content

Clear authorship, credentials, an about page, references to primary sources and consistent business information all help establish trust. This matters for traditional search as well; see our guide to E-E-A-T.

Keep it accurate and current

Outdated figures and broken claims undermine trust. Review key pages regularly and remove anything you cannot back up.

Make sure machines can read it

Fast, crawlable pages, clean HTML, structured data where appropriate and no important content hidden behind scripts or logins.

Be present beyond your own site

AI systems draw on many sources: reviews, directories, industry publications and forums. Consistent mentions across the web strengthen a brand's chances of being referenced.

Measure what you can

Track referrals from AI tools in analytics, monitor branded search and periodically test key questions in major assistants to see who gets cited.

Offer it to your clients
