Where AI Ad Targeting Falls Short (and What to Do Instead)

Automated bidding and AI-driven targeting have become the default in most ad platforms. In many accounts they outperform manual management. But they are not magic, and there are situations where handing everything to the algorithm costs clients money.

Why AI targeting needs data

Machine-learning systems learn from conversions. The more high-quality conversion data they have, the better they predict who will convert next. When that data is thin, noisy or misleading, the system guesses, and guessing is expensive.

Where it struggles

  • New products and launches: no sales history and no audience signals.
  • Low-volume accounts: too few conversions for the algorithm to learn reliably.
  • Long sales cycles: the real outcome, a signed contract, happens weeks after the click.
  • Poor tracking: if form spam or duplicate events count as conversions, the system optimises for the wrong thing.
  • Niche B2B audiences: small, specific groups that broad automated targeting easily misses.

What to do instead

Feed better signals. Track meaningful conversions, import offline sales where possible and assign values to different conversion types.

Start with more control. For launches and small accounts, begin with tighter targeting and manual or semi-automated bidding, then move to full automation once enough data exists.

Use audience inputs. Customer lists, website visitors and well-built audience signals give the system a head start.

Set guardrails. Use budget caps, target cost limits and negative keywords to stop runaway spend.

Review search terms and placements. Automation does not remove the need to check where ads actually appear.

AI versus manual is the wrong question

The best accounts combine both. Automation handles bidding at a scale no human can match, while specialists set strategy, structure, creative and tracking. Our guide to fixing underperforming PPC campaigns goes deeper.
